Is it  a coincidence that the word "spirit" is used to describe our favorite drinks and our immortal souls? I don't think so. We humans are pretty attached to both. Anyway, the spirit is the backbone of the liqueur. Sometimes it's a quiet strength, sometimes not so much. For each liqueur, this is an important choice which can range from vodka-like neutral spirits to brandies, rums, or whiskies. For a fruit based liqueur, the spirit may come from an eau-de-vie or brandy made from the essence flavor.
